Continuing loss and sadness cause one to consider death, and to look into the mouth of Hell, its home, where one learns to recognize it. In the summer of 1998 Mr. Keeling made these paintings in red, black, and white, the colours of German Nazism, while living on the upper West side of Manhattan, a traditionally Jewish neighbourhood. These paintings are a Requiem, a sweet memory for the dead who perished in the horror of the past century. | |
